When it comes to film journalism, there are several different outlets that focus on providing information regarding hot news and important events surrounding the film industry. Sometimes it can be regarding a new film, other times a scandal that an actor or actress has been a part of.
Because there’s so much news every day that can be covered by these outlets, it leaves room for many, many different sources. I will cover two magazine publishers that I have come across and two Film websites and compare the similarities and differences between the variety of sources.
Empire
Empire Magazine are a film magazine company that first began in May of 1989, with monthly releases since then, it has been highly regarded as one of, if not, the most popular go-to film magazine. Their stylish covers and informal ways of writing their articles make it so that the reader feels more engaged by what they are reading, and almost feels like there is some form of personal address towards them. Empire has a wide range of categories when it comes to film journalism, from them covering new movie and tv show releases to stories about certain actors.
Total Film
Total Film is a British film magazine that releases its magazines 13 times a year, with monthly releases since 1997 and a summer issue that was added in every since 2004. Its articles focus on getting news on hot recent events in the film and tv industry, as well as keeping in touch with the readers by offering an entire segment of the magazine to interacting with letters and emails sent in by fans. Compared to Empire, while there is a professional standard that is kept throughout articles, Total Film doesn’t forget about the importance of keeping their readers on a pedestal also.
Dark Horizons
Dark Horizons is a movie news website owned and written by Garth Franklin. Dark Horizons mainly focus on providing web articles regarding movie news, recent interviews with actors and new movie trailers along with various other things. Their website provides a sleek interface that allows readers to instantly access whatever topic they wish to delve into, whether it be the multitude of interviews that they cover or the new trailers that they are releasing coverage on.
The Hollywood Reporter
The Hollywood Reporter (THR) is an American digital magazine website, whilst also simultaneously being a published magazine company. THR focuses primarily on covering Hollywood film, television, and the entertainment industries that fall under it. Founded in 1930, it started off as a daily trade paper, it later adapted to a website format in 2010, whilst also picking up on the large-format print ways that most other magazine companies have worked by. Comparing THR to Dark Horizons there is a clear difference of professionalism in the two. The demographic of THR is that of a higher standard than compared to Dark Horizons, as seen by how the two differently address the topics they discuss in their articles, and how they communicate with and/or to the audience.
